Please note:

  • Color terms are intentionally basic since color gradations are so nuanced, and described differently by various observers. As used here, "red" includes all shades of maroon, pink, and blush white. “White” is reserved for flowers that have very little, if any, other color.
  • Flower color value is formally “set” by the top bud on the first day the flower opens! This is the color as seen in indirect sunlight. During the rest of the flower’s life, any color changes that occur do not affect the formal color class. Yes, some turn from one color to another. Fun!
  • Individual cultivar entries often have a color description, not just the basic color. The section of “historical color” presents the descriptions used in catalogs and at competitive peony flower shows before 1950.
